Graduation project for BA in Graphic Design at the Budapest Metropolitan University
The topic of mental health has attracted the interest of most fields of philosophy, religion, medicine, sociology, bioethics, law, and psychology, among other fields for centuries. I came up with the idea of creating illustrations inspired by the book “The Man Who Mistook His Wife For a Hat”, written by Oliver Sacks, representing various mental diseases and designing posters which will grab people’s attention because the level of mental illnesses has increased gradually in all parts of the world and, in the past few decades, has reached alarming statistical levels.

The Goal
Getting people to talk about a subject that tends to be taboo and about which many hold mistaken and prejudiced ideas will help the community to learn about the risk factors so that they can identify and learn to address them.
To bring bigger meaning to my project I decided to dedicate one of the posters to the 2019 year's topic of Mental Health Day (10th of October) - suicide prevention.
Process
Due to this subject being very complicated and detail-sensitive, thorough research must be conducted upon starting the visual work. Besides the book that was taken as an inspiration, I examined a lot of other literature, as well as contacted an individual behind a big YouTube channel “Special Book by Special Kids”. Given that this person is communicating with people suffering from various mental diseases on daily basis, it was important to understand their emotional and physical well-being and how they are coping with it. Upon gaining clarity, I have done my best to represent their feelings and thinking processes in a visual way. By doing so, I was aiming to bring a better understanding of this topic to those people who are unfamiliar with or never had to experience the topic of mental health.
Final Design
The final set of posters is focusing on separately chosen diseases, those that interested me the most, as well as some of those that are occurring most frequently. For each poster, I chose a specific symbol and colour palette which are scientifically and publicly associated with a specific disease. Furthermore, each poster is containing a quote from the book that inspired me which is serving as a key explanation as to what the specific mental disorder feels like. All of the posters are kept in a folder, accompanied by a flyer explaining the idea behind the project.
